    Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)

The U.S.-Korea Business Council commends the Korean government's ongoing efforts to improve intellectual property (IP) protection and enforcement in the Korean market, particularly in addressing the challenges of copyright infringement and online piracy. With the increasing sophistication of the Korean marketplace and the fact that Korea boasts the world's highest broadband penetration rate, a top Council priority is to ensure that Korean laws and policies related to IP protection and enforcement keep pace with developments in technology and distribution methods.

    Key Council priorities include:

    • Strong administration of criminal penalties in Korea for violators of IP and anti-counterfeiting laws to ensure deterrence of counterfeiting in the Korean marketplace, with priority on online piracy and peer-to-peer sharing.

    • Engagement with the Korean business community to address challenges to IP protection and enforcement at the regional and global level.
