CONFERENCES AND EVENTS

February 4-5: The U.S.-Korea Business Council and the Korea-U.S. Business Council held their interim joint meeting in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Keynote speakers at the meeting included Congressman Ed Royce; Lee Hyemin, Korean Deputy Minister for Trade; Dr. Han Duk-soo, Korean Ambassador to the United States; Wendy Cutler, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Japan, Korea, and APEC Affairs; Park Dongsun, Korean Ambassador for International Economic Cooperation; and Michelle Steel, Member of the State of California Board of Equalization. 

April 21: The Council held a meeting and discussion with Korean Labor Minister Yim Tae Hee in Washington.

May 19: The Council held its 5th annual gala dinner in Washington, featuring keynote remarks by Kim Jong-Hoon, Korean Minister for Trade.

May 20: The Council held its 23rd annual plenary meeting in Washington as an extraordinary session focused on the outlook for the U.S.-Korea FTA. Speakers included Ambassador Demetrios Marantis, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative; Congressman Dave Reichert; and Kurt Tong, Economic Coordinator for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and Senior Official for APEC, U.S. Department of State. In conjunction with the plenary meeting, Council members met with Senator Ben Nelson, Senator Jon Tester, Senator Mark Begich, and Senator Jim Webb to discuss the importance of the pending U.S.-Korea FTA.

May 24: The Council held a meeting and discussion with Lee Jae-oh, Chairman of Korea’s Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, in Washington.

June 2: The Council and the Korea Society held a forum titled “From Security to Economic Partnership: Toward Ratification of the FTA,” in New York City. Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo delivered the keynote remarks, and panelists included Thomas F. “Mack” McLarty, President of McLarty Associates and former White House Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton; Michael Wirth, Executive Vice President, Global Downstream, Chevron; and Victor Cha, Senior Advisor and Korea Chair, CSIS.

June 30: The Council held a breakfast forum with Dr. SaKong Il, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on G-20 and Special Economic Advisor to Korean President Lee Myung-bak, in Washington.

September 28: The Council and the Korea Economic Institute held a luncheon forum with Kim Moon-soo, governor of Korea’s Gyeonggi Province, in Washington.

 

POLICY OUTREACH AND TRADE MISSIONS

June 21-24: U.S.-Korea Business Council President Tami Overby and Executive Director Sean Connell visited Seoul, Korea, to meet with senior Korean government officials, including Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon; Deputy Minister for Trade Choi Seok-young; Senior Presidential Economic Secretary Dr. Choi Joong-Kyung; Chairman of Korea’s Presidential Committee for the G-20 SaKong Il; and Chairman of the Presidential Committee on National Competitiveness Kang Man-soo. In these meetings and in discussions with Korean business leaders, Overby and Connell encouraged them to engage the White House and Congress on the importance of having a clear timetable for ratification of the FTA by the time of the G-20 leaders meeting in Seoul in November 2010.

October 11-15: The Council organized a U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition delegation visit to Seoul, Korea. Delegation members met with Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon; Minister of Strategy and Finance Yoon Jeung-hyun; Deputy Minister for Trade Choi Seok-young; Senior Presidential Economic Secretary Dr. Choi Joong-Kyung; Chairman of Korea’s Presidential Committee for the G-20 SaKong Il; Chairman of the Presidential Committee on National Competitiveness Kang Man-soo; and Regulatory Reform Committee Chairman Ahn Choong-young.

November 9-11: The Council supported a visit by U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue to Seoul, Korea, for the G-20 Business Summit.

MEMBER BRIEFINGS AND BUSINESS FORUMS

January 14: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo in Washington.

March 1: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with U.S. Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stephens in Washington.

March 5: The Council held a debrief on recent U.S.-Korea bilateral consultations on energy cooperation with Dr. Phyllis Yoshida, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Energy Cooperation at the U.S. Department of Energy.

March 18: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Jeffrey Schott, Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute of International Affairs, on the implications of the EU-Korea FTA for the U.S. economy.

April 7: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Wendy Cutler, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Japan, Korea, and APEC Affairs, on recent developments on the pending U.S.-Korea FTA.

July 1: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Ambassador Demetrios Marantis, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative; and Francisco Sanchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, to discuss President Obama’s announcement on June 26 about the next steps on the FTA.

August 4: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a strategy session to discuss activities in support of the FTA during the Congressional recess.

September 30: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Demetrios Marantis, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, to discuss developments on the FTA.

October 6: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo on developments related to the U.S.-Korea FTA.

October 21: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Michelle O’Neill, Deputy Under Secretary for International Trade Policy, U.S. Department of Commerce, to discuss Coalition activities in support of the FTA.

November 17: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Ambassador Demetrios Marantis, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, to discuss developments on the FTA following the G-20 Summit.

December 13: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo to discuss the road forward on the FTA in 2011.

December 16: The Council and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition held a discussion with Ambassador Demetrios Marantis, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, to discuss the road forward on the FTA in 2011.

 

TRADE EDUCATION AND GRASSROOTS OUTREACH

March 20: Council President Tami Overby participated as a speaker at the World Overseas Korean Traders Association Congress in Los Angeles, California.

March 31-April 1: The Council, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program, launched the U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America tour in support of the U.S.-Korea FTA. Inaugural events were held in Mobile, Alabama, on March 31, and in Montgomery, Alabama, on April 1 (in partnership with the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo; Congressman Jo Bonner; Congressman Bobby Bright; Alabama Governor Bob Riley; Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange; and other local officials.

April 6: The Council, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program, held the U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs in New York event in New York City (in partnership with the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and MetLife). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo; Congressman Gregory Meeks; and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney.

May 18: The Council supported an event on U.S.-Korea relations hosted by the World Trade Center Baltimore and the Korea Economic Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

June: The Council and the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program released Faces of Trade: Success Stories with Korea, a publication highlighting U.S. small and medium enterprises that are successfully doing business in the Korean market.

June 3-4: The Council, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program, held the U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Austin, Texas (in partnership with the Austin Chamber of Commerce) and San Antonio, Texas (in partnership with the Free Trade Alliance – San Antonio). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo; Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell; and local officials and business leaders.

June 21-22: The Council, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program, held the U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Cincinnati, Ohio, Covington, Kentucky (in partnership with the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce), and Cleveland, Ohio (in partnership with the Cleveland Club). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo.

August 16-17: The Council, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program, held the U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Peoria, Illinois (in partnership with Caterpillar and the Peoria Chamber of Commerce); Naperville, Illinois (in partnership with the Naperville Chamber of Commerce); and Chicago, Illinois (in partnership with the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo, Congressman Aaron Schock, and other local officials and business leaders.

August 18-19: The Council, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber’s TradeRoots Program, held the U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Detroit, Michigan (in partnership with the Detroit Regional Chamber and the Asian-Pacific Islander Chamber of Commerce) and Lansing, Michigan (in partnership with the Lansing Chamber of Commerce). Keynote speakers at these events included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo.

August 25: Council President Tami Overby delivered the keynote address at a seminar organized by the Korean Chamber of Commerce in the USA, in New York City.

August 30-31: The Council held U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Seattle, Washington (in partnership with the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle); Tacoma, Washington (in partnership with the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, Port of Tacoma, World Trade Center Tacoma, and Korean Women’s Association); and Everett, Washington (in partnership with the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce and the Boeing Company). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo; Congressman Dave Reichert; and other local officials and business leaders.

September 1-3: The Council held U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Sacramento, California (in partnership with the California Farm Bureau and Blue Diamond); St. Helena, California (in partnership with the Napa Valley Vintners Association); and Los Angeles (in partnership with the Entertainment Industry Coalition and the California Chamber of Commerce). Keynote speakers at these events included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo.

September 10: The Council held U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Hartford, Connecticut (in partnership with the Connecticut Business & Industry Association and General Electric). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo.

October 19: The Council held U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in San Francisco, California (in partnership with the Consumer Electronics Association, Google, and Visa). Keynote speakers included Korean Ambassador Han Duk-soo.

October 20-21: The Council held U.S.-Korea Partnership: Growing Jobs Across America events in Dallas, Texas (in partnership with the Consumer Electronics Association), and Springfield, Arkansas (in partnership with Tysons Foods). Keynote speakers included Choi Jong-hyun, Minister for Economic Affairs, Korean Embassy USA.
